The best of 2016 according to Trausti Júlíusson (member of the Kraumur Jury and Icelandic music enthusiast)

  1. Páll Ivan frá Eiðum – This is my shit

The debut album by Páll Ivan frá Eiðum was released on Soundcloud in 2016. It will be out on vinyl on Mengi early in 2017. It is a strange and fascinating collection of homemade lo fi-pop songs with great melodies and oddball lyrics … Music is rarely this much fun.

  1. Bjarki – “B”

Techno wunderkind Bjarki released three triple albums this year on Nina Kraviz’ Trip label. “B” is the first one and the best. This accessible and powerful dance music album mixes influences from rave, IDM and European techno.

  1. Amiina – Fantômas

Amiina reinvent themselves on “Fantômas”. We can still hear the atmosphere of the old Amiina in the strings, but we also get a new sound with more beats and electronics, in part at least reminiscant of Kippi Kaninus’ solo work.

  1. Kælan mikla – Kælan mikla

Kælan mikla have been one of Iceland‘s strongest live groups for some time. On this album their initial punk noise has developped into a more synth-driven cold wave sound, without loosing any of the spark that made us love them in the first place.

  1. Cyber is Crap – Crap

The two members of Cyber is Crap are also a part of feminist hip-hop powerhouse Reykjavíkurdætur. Their first release Crap is a great collection of beats and rhymes.

Compilations and re-issues:

Re-issue of the year:

Biogen – Selected Works

The compilation of music by Icelandic electronic music pioneer Biogen is by far the most important reissue of 2016. The release was multiformat; CD, vinyl and digital download with a different track selection for each of the formats, comprising music from his entire career, some of it never released before. Biogen released electronic music in many different styles, from ambient to experimental to banging dance tunes. It‘s all represented on these reissues and you really need all the formats to get the whole picture.
