In our seria ‘I love Icelandic music because…’ ROK presents Albert Hendrix!
Hello Albert! Please introduce yourself…
I am Albert Hendrix, a 64 years old Dutchman, married with Marjo and proud father of 2 sons. Kazimierz and Kenny are both lovers of the Icelandic music scene as well. I am an industrial cleaning worker, and I work as a volunteer for ‘Vluchtelingenwerk Nederland’ (Dutch Council for Refugees). I followed a course at the Fotovakschool (Photography Academy) of Apeldoorn, The Netherlands. I became an avid music photographer and I make photos for VPRO’s 3voor12 (Limburg, The Netherlands).
Why do you like Icelandic music so much?
For me Icelandic music is so different because the musicians are so open-minded and are so keen on new projects, genres and styles. There’s no competition, no macho behavior and no jealousy between musicians. The solidarity in the music scene appeals to me. Further, the commitment to play not only in one band, but to perform with different bands is so great.
I travelled to Iceland for the first time in 2010. It was a longtime wish that came true. Immediately I lost my heart ‘cause of the friendly people, cafés, restaurants and the Icelandic beer.
On my way back from Iceland I watched an advertisement in the Icelandair aeroplane for the annually organized Iceland Airwaves festival. Back home, I instantly booked my Airwaves package for 2011. An accreditation as photographer was granted later on.
What was your first contact with Icelandic music?
My first contact with Icelandic music was on the Dutch radio. But the live concerts by Björk in Amsterdam in 2001 and 2007 impressed me that much that nowadays my CD rack is filled with Icelandic music!
What were the best live acts over the years:
Björk, Biophilia @ Harpa (2011)
Sigur Rós @ Laugardalshöll (2012)
Agent Fresco @ Reykjavik Art Museum (2011)(all concerts of Agent Fresco were fantastic!)
My favourite musicians are Björk, Sigur Rós, Vök, Mammút, GusGus, Kælan Mikla, Dj Flugvél og Geimskip. But most of all Agent Fresco! In 2011 I met Ana Stanicevic at a gig of Sindri Eldon at the Nordic House. She adviced me to go and see Agent Fresco that night. Now I have a personal relation with the band members because I made so many photos of their gigs.
