Oh my God & Jesus as well, God is Icelandic (God is Íslenskur)!

Friedriech Nietzsche wrote ‘God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him’. I had to check this statement while delving into Iceland’s musical past. I didn’t find the ‘God particle’, but God lives in exile in Iceland.

Iceland’s National Anthem/Hymn

The lyrics of the National Hymn are written by Matthías Jochumsson, the music by Sveinbjörn Sveinbjörnsson. The title is ‘Oh, God of our country’.

“Ó, guð vors lands”

Ó, guð vors lands! Ó, lands vors guð!
Vér lofum þitt heilaga, heilaga nafn!
Úr sólkerfum himnanna hnýta þér krans
þínir herskarar, tímanna safn.
Fyrir þér er einn dagur sem þúsund ár,
og þúsund ár dagur, ei meir;
eitt eilífðar smáblóm með titrandi tár,
sem tilbiður guð sinn og deyr.
Íslands þúsund ár,
Íslands þúsund ár!
eitt eilífðar smáblóm með titrandi tár,
sem tilbiður guð sinn og deyr.

Ó guð, ó guð! Vér föllum fram
og fórnum þér brennandi, brennandi sál,
guð faðir, vor drottinn frá kyni til kyns,
og vér kvökum vort helgasta mál.
Vér kvökum og þökkum í þúsund ár,
því þú ert vort einasta skjól.
Vér kvökum og þökkum með titrandi tár,
því þú tilbjóst vort forlagahjól.
Íslands þúsund ár,
Íslands þúsund ár!
Voru morgunsins húmköldu, hrynjandi tár,
sem hitna við skínandi sól.

Ó, guð vors lands! Ó, lands vors guð!
Vér lifum sem blaktandi, blaktandi strá.
Vér deyjum, ef þú ert ei ljós það og líf,
sem að lyftir oss duftinu frá.
Ó, vert þú hvern morgun vort ljúfasta líf,
vor leiðtogi í daganna þraut
og á kvöldin vor himneska hvíld og vor hlíf
og vor hertogi á þjóðlífsins braut.
Íslands þúsund ár,
Íslands þúsund ár!
verði gróandi þjóðlíf með þverrandi tár,
sem þroskast á guðsríkis braut.

English Version
“Oh, God of our country”

Oh, God of our country! Oh, our country’s God!
We worship Thy name in its wonder sublime.
The suns of the heavens are set in Thy crown
By Thy legions, the ages of time!
With Thee is each day as a thousand years,
Each thousand of years, but a day,
Eternity’s flow’r, with its homage of tears,
That reverently passes away.
Iceland’s thousand years,
Iceland’s thousand years!
Eternity’s flow’r, with its homage of tears,
That reverently passes away.

Our God, our God, we bow to Thee,
Our spirits most fervent we place in Thy care.
Lord, God of our fathers from age unto age,
We are breathing our holiest prayer.
We pray and we thank Thee a thousand years,
For safely protected we stand;
We pray and we bring Thee our homage of tears,
Our destiny rest in Thy hand.
Iceland’s thousand years,
Iceland’s thousand years!
The hoarfrost of morning which tounted those years,
Thy sun rising high, shall command!

Our country’s God! Our God’s country!
Our life is a feeble and quivering reed;
We perish, deprived of Thy spirit and light
To redeem and uphold in our need.
Inspire us at morn with Thy courage and love,
And lead through the days of our strife!
At evening send peace from Thy heaven above,
And safeguard our nation through life.
Iceland’s thousand years,
Iceland’s thousand years!
O, prosper our people, diminish our tears
And guide, in Thy wisdom, through life!

A postmetal band came up with this great name for the band: We Made God. Here is the official video We Made God made for the song “Gizmo” of their EP “As We Sleep” (2009).

In 1988 S.H. Draumur (Black-White Dreams), a band with Dr. Gunni, released the LP “Goð” on Lakeland Label (UK) as well as on Dr. Gunni’s own label Erðanúmúsík (E-10, 1988). It was re-released by Kimi Records in October 2010. Some Icelandic bands had the habit to choose a title with a double meaning: one in English (“God”) and one in Icelandic (“Idol”). So maybe this album is not about God at all. Deus does not exist…

sh draumur - godkover

Of course I have to mention The Sugarcubes classic “Deus”. To be found on the debut album “Life’s too good” (One Little Indian / Elektra / Smekkleysa, 1988). This song is my personal favourite song of all times, especially in the longer remix version mixed by DB/RS (Derek Birkett (One Little Indian Label founder) & Ray Schulman).

The Lyrics of “Deus”

Deus does not exit.
But if he does, he lives in the sky above me,
In the fattest largest cloud up there.
He’s whiter than white and cleaner then clean.
He wants to reach me.

Deus does not exist.
But if he does I always notice him.
Getting ready in his airy room.
He’s picking his gloves so gently off.
He wants to touch me.

I’m walking humbly down a tiny street,
Pulling my collar it gets bigger.

I once met him,
It really surprised me,
He put me in a bath tub,
Made me squeeky clean,
Really clean.

To create a universe
You must taste
The forbidden fruit.

He said hi. I said hi,
I was still clean.

Deus does not exist,
But if he does he’d want to get down from that cloud,
First marzipan fingers then marble hands,
More silent than silence and slower than slow,
Diving towards me.

My collar is huge room for two hands,
They start at the chest and move slowly down.

I thought I had seen everything,
He wasn’t white and fluffy,
He just had side burns,
He just had side burns,
And a quiff,
He said hi.
I said hi. I was still clean,
I was squeeky clean.
I was surprised.
Just as you would be.

Deus, Deus, Deus, Deus.

He does not exist.

If you have a go(o)d look at the back of the album, it reads also as
“life’s tooo god” (with an arrow on the 3rd o).

sykurmolarnir - life is too god

Metal band Celestine has the song “God” on their album “At the Borders of Arcadia”.

Here is a live at Eistnaflug festival version of the song from last year.

The Lyrics of “Spidergod”

by Dr. Gunni

Bless, another band with Dr. Gunni on vocals & guitar, Ari Eldon on bass, Birgir Baldursson on drums & Pétur on guitar, has put the song “Spidergod” on the album “Gums” (Bad Tast Ltd. BT26-1 (LP) & BT26-2 (CD)/Rough Trade USA, 1990).

This album is dedicated to Tex Avery, the King of Cartoons. Óttarr Proppé (also singer in HAM, Rass, Dr. Spock) is the voice of the Spidergod. This album was produced by Sugarcube Þór (Thor) Eldon, brother of bass player Ari.

I think something is going to happen
’cause my mother found the pornomags in the top drawer.

But she said, nothing at all,
just drew an upside-down cross on my forehead with lipstick.
I think something is going to happen
’cause when I went to the toilet to shit,
there came no shit, just a hairy spider.

It said: HELLO HI HO.
And I asked it, and I asked it,
is there a god, is Armageddon coming?
And it said: DEFINITELY NO,
and it said: DEFINITELY NOT, NO… NO… NO…

Psychedelic, indie-rock, shoegaze, noise band Singapore Sling made the song “Godman”. This song is featured of their 4th album “Perversity, Desperation And Death” (8mmusik/Cold Blood Music, 2009).

Kingdom of God

Singapore Sling’s frontman Henrik Björnsson is also member of Dead Skeletons who made the song “Kingdom of God”, track 3 of the album “Dead Magick” (2011).

I am God to my friends

The rockers in Reykjavik! had the song”I am God to my friends” on their debut album “Glacial landscapes, religion, oppression & alcohol”, recorded with Valgeir Sigurðsson at his Greenhouse Studios (12 Tónar, 2006).

Orchestra Of Few

“God is Íslenskur” (God is Icelandic)

Then the devil is 6, then God is 7.
