I’ve been living next door to Alice
Gunnar Lárus Hjálmarsson, better known as Dr. Gunni, one of the godfathers of Iceland’s alternative pop and rock scene, teamed up with keyboardplayer and Sugarcube Margrét (Magga) Örnólfsdóttir. This duet wrote the music for a play by the Theatre Company of Akureyri about Alice in Wonderland entitled ‘Lísa í Undralandi’. Magga provided the lyrics, Herr Doktor delivered the poppy melodies. Kristján Freyr Halldórsson (Reykjavík! (the band), Dr. Gunni (the band) and Prins Póló) took a seat behind the drums. All music was recorded and produced by multi-instrumentalist and bedroom-producer Þórir Bogason (Just Another Snake Cult), with a helping hand of Dr. Gunni.
Vocalists are: East of my youth singer Thelma Marín Jónsdóttir as Lísa, Sólveig Guðmundsdóttir (Hjartadrottningin and more), Benedikt Karl Blöndal (Hattarinn and more) and Pétur Ármannsson (Kanínukarlinn and more), together with 6 young actors from the North, namely þau Bjarklind Ásta, Elísa Ýrr, Ólafur Ingi, Sara María, Sóley Dögg and Sunneva.
The play’s music brings in mind Dr. Gunni’s previous “Abbababb!” projects (1997 and 2007), Unun in a poppy mood anno 1994, Magga’s soundtracks for the movies “Einkalíf” (1995) and “Regína” (2001), and the song about the dead cat from the movie “Didda og Dauði kötturinn” (2003).
Good stuff to be compared with! Lewis Carroll would have been proud about Alice’s Adventures in Akureyri in Nature’s Wonderland Iceland.
