Staring at the dark side of the killing moon

I know the 2 boys for a while now. From the days they were still playing deep house as ‘Captain Fufanu’ and on stage with trumpet and guitar as supporting artists with the alive and kicking loud live gigs of Ghostigital. But who needs a ‘Captain’ if you already have Captain Jack, Captain Beefheart, Captain America and Captain Sensible: Áfram Fufanu! The 2 Einarssons supporting the dad of Hrafnkell Flóki ‘Kaktus’: Mr E aka EÖB, the singer of Purrkur Pillnikk, KUKL, The Sugarcubes, Grindverk, and ‘101 Reykjavik’ soundtrack fame.

2015 is the year of Fufanu, as supporting act of Blur’s and Gorillaz’ Damon Albarn (friend of Iceland for a long time btw) and The Vaccines (1/4 Icelandic btw). Fufanu released the single “Circus life” on 12. May 2015 on the One Little Indian Records label. Now the sons of a different Einar are back with the 4-track EP “Adjust to the light” on OLI (friends of Iceland for a long time as well). Keep in mind that OLI is giving shelter to Björk, Ásgeir Trausti, Samaris, Ólöf Arnalds … The album was recorded, mixed and produced by Ghostigital’s genious Curver.

Opener “Will We Last clangorous” kicks off with metallic guitars and a pumping bass: a post2-punk tune with an existential entrance. In song 2 “The Hours” Kaktus is Falling down on a British Pavement. “Blinking” starts where track 2 ended, more bruised, more black-eyed. The isolation of “City Lights” reminds me of the Cure and Joy Division.

Fufanu will invade the grey matter of your brain if you are into indie rock with an early new wave Hook. It’s a Damon, Ian, Mark E with a black hairdo staring at the dark side of the killing moon, lost in a forest, busy with adjusting to the light.
